Neurodiagnostic Vestibular Testing

The inner ear is home to the hearing and balance centers. The receptors within the inner ear allow signals to be received and processed by a variety of locations within the central nervous system and the brain. During your visit, the audiologist will ask you questions regarding your current symptoms, and how they impact your quality of life. They will then perform a series of tests to assess the overall health and function of your inner ear, including the hearing and balance centers. Following testing, the audiologist will discuss your results with you and make recommendations based on that information.

Fall Risk Assessment

Preventing falls is of vital importance for the aging population. During our neurodiagnostic vestibular test battery, a balance assessment is completed to determine fall risk. This finding is then interpreted along with the other tests to determine if the fall risk is due to a problem with the balance centers in your ears, or if it is related to something else. Based on that information, your audiologist can make recommendations on what you can do to reduce your risk of falls.

Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers

The most common cause of vertigo is a condition called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), and it is treated with physical therapy maneuvers. Initially, the audiologist will complete the neurodiagnostic vestibular testing to ensure the overall health and function of your balance centers. If there is a BPPV involvement, they will then complete canalith repositioning maneuvers at that time. We will recommend that you return for a follow-up appointment which is 30 minutes long to ensure the treatment was effective, and complete additional treatments as needed. Typically, this condition will clear in about 1-3 treatment sessions.
